Synopsis
Can a murder investigation keep these opposites from attracting?
Cara Rogers wants a fresh start after a slew of bad luck in Washington DC. Moving to Virginia to help her aunt run La Maison de Chien, a doggie spa, is just the peace of mind she needs. No stress. Just her aunt, the dogs, and wide-open country.
But when she finds Aunt Marian floating in the doggie swimming pool, the rest she so desperately needs flies out the window. The only witness to the death is Rex, an apricot maltipoo, and while he may not be able to talk, he’s communicating the only way he knows how—one paw at a time. And Rex’s clues lead to murder. Can Cara keep the doggie spa afloat, convince Middleburg homicide detective Cole Sampson that Aunt Marian’s death was no accident, and keep Rex from the killer’s clutches before they all end up as dead as dogs?

Where are you from?
Lane:  Atlanta, GA
Jacqui: I always say I’m from “nowhere.”  I was born in Leicester, England, and my family moved to eight more places –within the United Kingdom, Ireland, and the U.S. -- before I graduated from high school in Midland, Michigan.

Tell us your latest news?
Lane will be at Molon Lave Vineyards, in Warrenton, VA, on June 14.

When and why did you begin writing?
Lane: As a kid, I really lived in my head.  I daydreamed a lot.  I would go to sleep at night making up adventure stories.
Jacqui: I was a bookworm, and at age seven, I decided I wanted to inspire in people that same feeling I had when I read a book I enjoyed.

When did you first consider yourself a writer?
Lane: When I joined my first professional organization writing organization Sisters in Crime.
Jacqui: I started my first novel when I was seventeen, but I didn’t finish it.  Then I completed a novel when I was twenty (a shelf-drawer novelJ

What inspired you to write your first book?
Jacqui: The novel I started when I was seventeen was about a love triangle I was embroiled in at fourteen.

Do you have a specific writing style?
Lane: It’s hard for me to NOT write humor.  I had to tone it down for Maltipoos Are Murder, since it’s foremost a love story.
Jacqui: I usually write darker stuff with angst-written heroines.  Lane got me to lighten up a bit.

How did you come up with the title? We liked the cute alliteration, and my Maltese Angelito of 18 years was still alive at that point (sniff!)

Is there a message in your novel that you want readers to grasp?  Never, ever give up.  Cara is determined to do the right thing – by her former employees and by her great-aunt.  By the end of the book, we know she’s going to be just fine.

What would you like my readers to know? How happy we are about how readers have taken to these characters and the setting!

  1. About 25 yrs ago I lived in Warrenton Va, I don't remember that vineyard being there but they had the best used book store I have ever been too and a pizza place called Joe's pizza. We still talk of the pizza and the book store next door :)
